Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

I am a believer when it comes to bass fishing, when the bite gets tough a scented bait can make or break the day. I am a rookie fly fisherman with this being only my second year under my belt. Fly fishing for big bluegill has really been an enjoyment though, I do on occasions have difficulty. Mostly when a bluegill won`t hold on the the fly before I have a chance to set the hook. Also thinking out loud would the bluegill follow a fly better? Just curious if anyone has ever used attractant scents for fly fishing?

Many scent products can matt feathers or hair on a fly. If you tie your own, try putting a tiny bit of wool (I loop mine) on the butt of the fly. Gills have tiny teeth on their tongue that become entangled with the wool and will give you an extra split second to tighten up your line and hook them. If you are using wet flies, use a wool yarn body.
Depending on the fly, it works great. I've notice an increase in strikes if I dip my fly in the Gulp minnow juice.
May look into some gulp juices. Have a few spare jars with some left overs.

Adding something like a Gulp maggot to the hook can also increase success.

I'll have to try adding the wool Badgerloader - makes sense!

...ive fly fished with chartreuse and pink waxies threaded on a bare hook with the flyrod... the bright colors also act as an indicator in the right conditions... color disappears... i set the hook

We did once when targeting sturgeon.......unsuccessfully.
