Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

My Great Uncle used to make something similar to these when I was a kid. These are made by soldering a hook to a small spinner blade. Add a split ring, swivel, paint, and some hackle you're good to go. Can't wait to try them out!

yep they work, I make my own, just a sodering gun and a split ring, paint and whatever you want to put on them, my favorites are on a #2 willow leaf spinner and a #8 hook in the brightest gold I can find, gills, crappie, trout and bass love em, and I can throw them very easly on a 5wt fly rod.
Great looking flies! Do you think it would still work if the blade was bonded to the hook with epoxy instead of the lead solder? Just trying to think of a way to cut the weight a little so I could cast them with my 2wt.

It might even be possible to embed the swivel in the belly and go without the split ring, cutting a little more weight.

I bet the crappie just can't leave one of those things alone!

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Keith. I do think it would be possible to use epoxy. The trick is holding the hook steady against the blade while soldering or using other means. I use small forceps as a clamp. I have also found the swivel is not needed which would cut weight, action is good with just the split ring. If you prefer to use the swivel only, I'm sure it could be done as well. Let me know if I can help you with anything.
