Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Great Saturday behind the Sturgeon Moon....heavy overcast and a falling wind tide gave us a blockbuster morning with over 130 sunfish..

Absolutely John........we rarely catch just one sunfish species but normally a pattern is developed that targets the best fish on a given day......Saturday was clearly dominated by husky shellcrackers so we took the bait literally and went with them.....it didn't tire out for well over two hours............

That's what I like Multi-Species.There are generally around 9-11 or so Species available to catch in the 3 or 4 lakes I usually fish here in NJ .It's a great day when 5 or more are caught !

John it's an amazing fishery.........we caught eleven largemouth, white perch and yellow perch the first thirty minutes of the day before moving back in the swamp.......but the creeks hold too many species to mention here.......we caught Pumpkinseed, Redear, Redbreast, Coppernose, Warmouth along with chain pickerel, bullheads and a bowfin as well back in the creek.....if you see the fishing line in some of my pictures you may see the 16 pound test........gives me a chance when these other species hit which is going to happen...........

How many species are there or have you caught there Jeff?

We're very fortunate along the estuary John.......it is such a fertile body of water you never really know what you're going to catch on a particular day.......I knew I might catch a few shellcrackers today but 85 quality crackers was a big bonus......all of these redear were released to help fuel the population explosion in this region.........

Thanks John.....kinda surprised us thinking it was August but the full moon has power........we actually started on some large cypress flats at first light and had more largemouth activity than sunfish in that region.......we agreed to move back into some creeks deep in the swamp because of the moving water.......that shift paid off immediately and I commenced to using 350 crickets between 7:30 and 10:30 when our heavy overcast started giving way to sunny skies........several creek bends provided heavy shellcracker activity on nearly every cast for almost an hour......it was insane for a bit.......I took 370 pictures this morning.......LOL
