I used to match line and rod weight. I like to use small (2 and 3 weight) rods. But when I go to weighted flies I found they cast easier With the next size line weight. My intermidiate sinking fly line is a 4 Wt. And the 8' 2 weight rod handles it fine.
Shooter I think I read where you upsize your fly line for role casting. Would you go over that again?
well Greg i push my line to rod weight to the max,i have many fly rods (my wife says to many)i over line all of them .
i have a couple of 4 wts. that i just use 5 wt on. but the majority of my rods are 5 and six wts. 6 1/2 to 7 footers these rods are loaded with 8 wt to 11 wt. double taper floating line.
i use only high quality line(most of my line is Orvis GEN3) ,on some of these rods i gave more for the line then the rod,the idea behind this overloading is line speed for the roll cast.
i fish in timber under trees ,you have to keep your rod in front of you ,the stroke of the rod is short ,sometimes real short. the heavy line loads the rod real fast and allows for wicked line speeds and tight loops on the roll.
i like the old glass rods i have several and they seem to like the heavy line more then the composite rods do,although i have three eagle claw composites 7' Granger XGs rated as 4 wt. i am using 10 wt DT/F line on these rods and they do just fine.
none of these rods cost more then forty bucks ,including the ones that i made myself. i just bought three old solid glass rods on ebay i will rebuild these ,turn them down some and tweak them ,and see what they can do.
