Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Started fly fishing early this summer, to get in some casting practice I would slip off to a small pond and ended up catching a few Bluegills. Started off with trout in mind but now I am not sure I am not having more fun fishing for Bluegills. Am I alone in this???

i started like you wanted to go for trout but fell in love with blue gills. i found drys and poppers work best. i hope to get into salt water fly fishing by next summer.

Two firsts today, caught my first gill with my new upgraded rod and reel and my first gill on a streamer (wollybugger). Not a record, right at eight inches, but made my day since the pond has been slow the last several days. Will be returning to Bama late this week and look forward to these southern gills.

The fish you are catching that day is the one to be passionate about. Every freshwater fishing trip I take is generally preceded by a few hours at the vice turning out what I hope will be the fly of the day! It works out that way sometimes. After I get home and put my gear away I am back at the vice improving the flies that got the job done. Brown trout, Small mouth, Large mouth, Shad, Stripers and of course the granddaddy Big Gills!

hi scott no your not alone. i just switched over from using spinning ul to fly rods. that is my my main fish i go after is gills. yeah anybody can catch bass or catfish. but try and get a good size bream now a days. as for my rods. i have 3 customs built just for gill fishing. one is a hybrid were it can be use as a spinning or a fly rod and its a 8 1/2 2pc wgt for either 3 or 4 weight line. the other 2 are a 8 ft pc 6wgt that way if i catch anything bigger than a gill. some of the ponds i fish have big bass in them. and then thier is my ul fly rod its a 3 wgt and made just for gill fishing. this one will be used fro some creeks that i fish. they have a lot of over hang and i cant get a big fly rod in thier. i just need to get a fly reel for that one. but nope your not alone in this passion for gill chasing with fly rods.

Been using a 7'6" 4 wt and a 8'6" 5 wt, just got a 9' 6wt and plan to add a 3 wt in the spring. Any suggestions on rod length?

Scott, buy yourself a 2 or 3wt flyrod and you start catching some fat bluegills. I have found this type of fishing the most rewarding of all. After you catch a mess of bluegill, the other reward is the sweet taste of a fried filet hot from the skillet.

Nope, you're in the right place. There's a group here devoted to fly rod'n for gills. Check it out. I've got one but can't seem to put down my cricket pole long enough to give it an honest try. I did try it for trout last fall on vacation in the Georgia mountains. Never got a rise. Switched to a spinning reel and yellow Shyster and caught one on my first cast. Last one too! Last trout in the hole I mean. Only bite I got. Bluegill never let you down though. Even on a fly rod, they are always looking for a fight!
