Bottle Brush, v.2
Here's another of those Bottle Brush flies that worked this season passed.
This one has a full foam body, which I've tied in segments, giving the illusion of an insect-like carapace.
I added a few fibers as a tail, as well.
The hackle was chosen long on purpose, 2-2.5x hook shank length. The overall effect has all the elements of a Wooly Bugger, don't you think?
This should be a floater, with all those hairy, leggy fibers. It was something surface feeding gills really went for during the warm months.
It also presents differently than a traditional popper, think. It floats, but is softer and more "buggy" looking from the fishes POV. At least that's the only explanation I can give.
This is best over a calm surface, when the wind is down. It should also work well on the drift in flowing water... Trout and stream anglers take note.

I'm gonna try and get some size 20 hooks.
They can double as worm and fly hooks.
I don't think I could see anything smaller.
I have a big roll of 2# Stren, already.

Let me know if your interested, happy to send some hooks. Targeted the micro bluegill
this year and had a blast. Think I found my muse and was able to get down to a 1.25 inch bluegill. . Hope to pick up a few tips from the ice guys this year.

Micro fish?
No not really. I didn't do a lot of fishing, seems like there was always something.
Just going was enough.
I should probably do it, more, instead of chasing all over after "bigguns."

Both classic North patterns.
Not hard to tie, either, and the materials aren't costly.
They work on bluegill, too, as I'm sure you know.

Joe, the hackle is important.
Unlike soft hackle feathers, these are stiff, dyed neck hackle.
As for skill, well... It takes perseverance more than skill. You start slow with simple patterns and you do a few each day. A good YouTube connection helps show you how things go together
Every fly tyer started out knowing nothing. You can do this.

Something like a Stewart Black, yes.
That wasn't a deliberate inspiration, but it preceded those that were.
All of these bottle brush type flies seem to appeal to the bluegill.
