Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Okuma Celilo 5' ul graphite paired with a Diawa Crossfire reel filled with 6 lb braid.
I have plans to finally try 4lb Nanofil on this setup with a spare spool. I have caught lm bass up to 4 lbs on this rig.

Ken;; have you tried using reel magic;; or something similar on your line??  Ive found it helps a lot in taming the line !!

As I recall the 4 lb Nano would drift with the wind tremendously Very light stuff.. But, I was using very little weight.....oftentimes using 1/100 oz jigheads with a couple spikes, or size 16 ice jigs with no weight and no float, and trying to cast for distance.

My biggest gripe, was every time I caught a fish the pull on the line would cause the line to bite into itself on the spool, resulting in my next cast going nowhere, until I pulled the line off the reel by hand and freed it up. When I was reeling back in with no fish or resistance, it just coiled too loose on the reel, and the next fish tightened it up again.

If I added a little weight the problem improved tremendously, but Sufix didn't have that problem at all so I went back to it.

Still experimenting!

ken - had some coiling in the begining.i think like braid it has a "break-in period and softens up.sice i mostly use for jigging and swimming road runners and small beetle spins the line stays taught .it is very light and probably not good for float fishing in the wind.i too use small reels.might look into a wider spool reel myself.the casting distance may increase even more.i mainly use this where i have to feel the bite more than see it.

well I've been field testing this 6 lb Nanofil for the past few days on this setup.

positives

  1. castability - huge gain in distance at least 25%
  2. 0 wind knots the past 3 days

negatives

  1. it has a coil memory... probably should of went with 4 lb on this setup because of the tiny spool dia.
  2. reduced sensitivity because of the coiling
  3. tests greater than 6lbs out of the pkg

for me i would see definite advantages for ice fishing, ultra and microlight spinning

as i recall in the store the 6lb test seemed to be the most popular item.

No worries whatsoever, Jim! I meant what I said about being glad the Nanofil works for you....if an angler has confidence in his/her setup, I believe it will boost productivity. And truth be told, it WAS 4lb Nano that gave me all the fits, so maybe we're on the same page after all.....perhaps I should retry it with a heavier test??

i think 6 is as amall as i would go ken.my local tackle store talked me out of 4 lb.said it is almost un managable.i meant no disrespect tony.i rarely use a float and fish by feel when fishing deep.when they are within 10 feet of the surface i am usually throwing flies.most water around me worth a damn is deep with some shallower shoreline areas.
