Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Hey guys.  Well, when I decided to go after "big bluegills" I had no idea....I feel like I am chasing that elusive monster buck in the woods.  Still fun, a lot of fun, but no good success yet.  Im also trying to do it by artificial lure only.  Not tipped with a worm or wax worm or whatever.  Tough?  Sure is.  But Ill get it done.  I am having fun, thats for sure.  I have been using mostly smalls jigs, 1/32 to 1/64 with tiny tubes or curly tail grubs.  Ive been switching colors to pretty much every combination out there.  I also just recently found a fly fishing shop in my area that offers casting lessons.  SO come July 19th, I will start dabbling with a fly rod.  I think I will be more successful with that.  But we shall see!  Hope everyone out there is having fun and having luck out there on the water!

Hey Bill , I"ve had lots of bad luck lately too, that's just how it goes sometimes buddy.  I think you live up in Jim Gronaws neck of the woods and lots of great public water there from the looks of Jim's pics on here. I don't tip baits either and I know that sssssometimes limits my catches , but I still manage a few to eat and that's what I mainly interested in anyway.

Sometimes it is tough and ya just gotta keep plugging along so to speak buddy..

Yeah, and plug along I will.  I guess too if I really wanted to catch numbers fish I could just go to a float and a worm and catch em all day.  But my goal is to catch them on artificial lures.  Dont know why.  Its just how I want to do it.  And something like fishing, there is no wrong way.  Fishing is what we make of it for ourselves right?  I have several local ponds/lakes Ive been working on.  Ill learn it eventually.  In the mean time, Im still having fun and I really think Im going to have a blast when I get my fly rod in a few weeks.

bill tip those jigs with something, they got alot to eat right now.i would use a small  float and create a little surface commotion .they are always looking up  to some degree.then they will see your jig.the bigger ones in my area hold below the little ones.i try to key on the deep edges of weeds.evening is flyrod time around here

Ill try that this weekend Jim.  I may fish a little tonight, but if not, my next outing is Saturday am.  Thanks.

Bill

Hang in there. What is are doing is actually called artlure. This technique is huge in some parts of the world. I've attached a link that may help.
