Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Caught this nice little chunky warmouth yesterday. Was burning in a missed hit and it burst out of the weeds and took my bait. A nice surprise.

Weed and wood in slow water and ponds are the preferred habitat of warmouth, according to the books.
Sounds like you're on to something.

This pond has floating vegetation around the edges as well as a couple willows growing right on the edge of water offering good habitat for them. You can see a rotted stump and the log from it that lays in the pond. There's a couple like this at this place. Which is where I caught a couple last fall.

The last one I caught wasn't around heavy wooden cover, but there was some in the vicinity.
The others I've caught were around wood, however.
Wood and bog does seem to be a favored feature for them; maybe even a constant.
They never get big (the record is like 2.5-3.0 lbs), but they are scrappy and attractive.
I'm always pleased to catch one.
When I
When I find myself saying, "Hey, it's a gill with a bass's mouth" - I've got a warmouth!

All of the war mouth that I have caught here in florida are always around wood.

I think they must have some specific requirements for habitat.
Some places are overrun with them, elsewhere it's just a scattered few.
From what I have seen, they seem to be relatively solitary if left to their own devices.
More like a black bass, than bluegill.

Thanks everyone, they are such a cool fish, wish more places nearby had them.
