Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

I went out to some ponds yesterday,  the air temp was 58 F the water was cold. I fished two different flies...both caught fish. With  the Super Cypret Minnow, I caught two nice Copper-head gills and one small bass. With the new sinking spider I caught 3 hand-size copper-head gills. The minnow works well any time of the year and this was the first time I have fished the new sinking spider. I only fished about 1 1/2 hours total so that was a pretty good catch with the water being that cold. I think the new sinking spider is going to be a real winner, I can't wait to fish it in the spring. I am not that great at tying soft hackle.....so I used medium rubber legs instead. That along with chenille, gold flash, lead wire and a gold bead is all there is to it. I will try to post a couple pictures.....Happy New Year to all...Don in SC

LOVE THEM "T" BOLTS  BUDDY !!!!!!! LOOKED AT A MAG YESTERDAY AS A MATTER OF FACT .... NICE GILL PIC WITH THE FLY ROD TOO !!!!!!!

Yes, I like the T-bolts, I have two, a standard in .22LR and a Varmint in .22Mag. They are not as accurate as a good bolt gun, but they are a lot of fun.....Good Quality.  My favorite rifles are my Coopers, one in .17 Remington and one in .22 Hornet. 5 shots with either one looks like a tiny 3-leaf clover @ 100 yds (with a good handload).

The gills pictured are small compared to some I have pulled out of those ponds....several over 2 pounds. It is a shame you live so far away........I guess the gills have about shutdown where you live.

It looks like you may have received a lot of snow......We seldom see any of that here.........Don in SC

OH MY COOPERS !!!!!!!!!!!! GREAT SHOOTERS THERE BUDDY......YUP WE GET SOME SNOW here once in a while and ya I wish we lived closer too ........ K HORNET OR REGULAR HORNET ? I USED TO LOAD FOR SOME DUECES I'VE HAD OVER THE YEARS .222 CALIBER OF COURSE.

Regular Hornet......But I worked up a load using Hogden  Li'L Gun and a Hornady 35 grain Vmax that gives the old Hornet new life. 3,155 FPS at safe pressures that puts one bullet right on top of the other. It is a bit wind sensitive, but beyond that it's a Blast (pun intended). I have an older Remington 700 BDL varmint in .222 (tha-duce) that I bought in 1972.  50 grain match bullet over IMR 4198 makes it a real "tac-driver". It shoots as good today as it did when I bought it.  No snow here, rain instead. That will keep the river high so no trout fishing for at least 3 weeks, maybe longer..........I grew up in Tenn, so I know all about shoveling sidewalks and driveways........

Good Luck............Don in SC

MAN YOU GOTTA POST SOME OF THOSE FLY PATTERNS I JUST LOOKED AT BUDDY !!!!!! OUTSTANDING.....

I will see if I can put together a couple videos for those patterns.........Don in SC

real nice catches there Don !!  post the flies you used on them!!

Hey Don are there plain, old fashioned pictures of the bead head spider pattern somewhere?

The Cyperts Minnow I know, but you know how it is with me and video - love/hate all the way.

No, .....Maybe I will make some "photo" step X steps instead of a video. Give me some time and I will put something together. ...................Don
