Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Just trying to figure out how many people have tried tenkara and your favorite method / fly.

I use a Fountainhead Caddis rod and prefer to use dry flies in size #12. I started to use nymphs and English North Country Spiders

Mike, I think trying to equate Tenkara to "cane pole" fishing is rather a reach.  "Sophisticated" as you may be, Tenkara has been around for many years and is an art as much as western fly fishing.  Anything new to you, does not equate to something less or is below a standard by which we pursue our quarry.  I was in the tackle business for 20 years and have equipment that is only on most peoples wish list, yet I fish Tenkara style and find it just as rewarding and enjoyable.  This is no way to correct or put down you or anyone who does not find it worthy of there time and effort.

Best regards,

Craig

I had a TenkaraUSA rod for a while and sold it.  I liked the simplicity of the style of fishing and missed having the rod.  I purchased a less expensive Tenkara rod so that I could keep one handy for those times that such a rod is appropriate and useful. As far as flies, I use just about any light weight fly that I have in my box, wet, dry, foam, whatever the bluegill are hitting.

John Thanks for the reply. Nice to know they hit most flies when presented

I started out using sakasa kebari (wet flies with the hackle slanted forward rather than back) and found that four at once (three droppers) worked much better than a single fly. Now I pretty much use Killer Buggers, which work really well by themselves. Either a very slow steady retrieve or very slight pauses works.

Chris

Thanks, I think you fish the killer bugger as a single. I had a friend in the UK send me a few Sawyer Killer Bugs. I'm going to try them this weekend. I also was able to pick up a few Stewart Spiders that I'm looking to try as well.

Nice going, hope the rod worked out well for you and that you managed your first catch. If you need anything let me know.

I use a tenkara usa 11ft iwana, and cant beat a bluegill bully tied on the end of the line. its my version of the kebari tied with rubber legs instead of hackle

Jordan

Thanks, don't think I seen that fly. I Google later tonight
