Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

I'm looking forward to trying out my 2-weight Redington Classic Trout on some 'gills this spring and summer, and would like to have a sinking or intermediate line in my bag of tricks but the choices seem really limited when looking for a 2-weight of this type.

Things get a little better in the 3-weight class, there are more intermediates available, but I'm not sure about overlining with a 3-weight intermediate on this rod, has anyone tried it?or

Orvis does have a 2-weight intermediate (Gen 3 Clear) and it's on sale cheap (24 bucks) but a very high percentage of the reviewers have also complained that it has severe memory problems, although they were also using much heavier weights of line. It's a mono-core line, so I guess that's to be expected.

Orvis also sells non-clear braided core Gen 3, which should dispense with the memory issues, and it's also on sale cheap, but is only available in WF3I and up, which takes me back to overlining...

Opinions?

Thanks,

Jonathan

i am not sure how deep you wish to fish ,but around here the deepest i fish for gills would be 12 ft.even in clear deep strip mines the themocline settles at about 16-20 in the summer.even the deepest gills wont be any deeper than that cause of low oxygen.the outside edge of the weedlines is about 14 ft.so a long leader on floating and weighted fly should get in the zone.i have a sinking tip and would rather just go with my micro ultralight stuff than flinging all that stuff past my ear.

As stated by a couple of other posters the 2wt is tuffer than most people believe. I Don't personally use any sinking lines on my 2wt but I have caught up to 3# smallies on it with no problem and I saw a fella land a 12 to 15# carp on a 3wt and it did not take a long time either. I have a 3wt DT floating on my TFO 6' 2wt. I didn't like the 2wt wf line on it at all. If you must use a sinking line on any rod I would recommend the roll cast to get the line up and then a normal pickup and cast. It works much better than trying to power the line into a normal cast without the preceding roll cast. I am not familiar with the rod of which you speak but I bet it will handle a 3wt with little problem.
