Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Bruce Condello's 225 gallon heated, filtered tank is full of redear sunfish. The redears absolutely love eating aquarium grade bloodworms.

Me too, Tony - one of my best bluegill ponds has never had a feed-trained bass, or for that matter a hatchery bass of any sort, stocked in it, yet there are a handful of largemouth that have learned to eat pellets.

Walt, I too have witnessed native LMB taking pellets many times. And these are fish that were born into our ponds, not feed trained hatchery fish.

I have also observed fish learning feed-training from other fish, although in my case it's undesirable.  I have a client whose 1/2 acre pond we're managing for big bluegill; it was stocked before I came on the scene, by a fish guy from Kentucky, and the bass that were stocked are obviously feed-trained because they annihilate (and hog) the pellets whenever the feeder goes off.  We took around seventeen bass from 12" to 15" out of there last spring, and replaced them with non-feed-trained bass of about the same size from another pond.  I thought that with that much of a reduction in the numbers of feed-trained, that there would be plenty of food for the bluegill...

So this fall, while sampling the pond, I saw multiple largemouth 10" and under eating pellets.  The pond has been stocked for over three years now, so these are bass that have been born in the pond, i.e. non-feed-trained - and the dummies (or maybe they're smarties, smarter than we want them to be) obviously are watching mom and pop gobbling up the pellets, and doing likewise.

Neat Bruce looks like they can put on the feed bag. About how many do you have in the aquarium and about what size are they and about how many blood worms do you normally feed then at a time and how often do you feed them? Great stuff.

Can hardly wait to see what you come up with Bruce!

I have a much more exciting offshoot of this experiment.  Off the open forum. ;-)

Now I'm excited....I think a little experimentation is in my future this spring.

I'd say the RES feed train at least twice as fast with bluegill present.
