Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

A lot of the rubber legs I use on my flies come from spinner bait shirts that I cut off of the no name spinner baits you can get at Walmart.  But here is a source of legs that have that natural shape to them already.  It's call a sun ball and I found it at the Dollar Tree store where everything is a buck.  They are super stretchy, soft but strong.  You can also find cush balls which have multiple color rubber legs.  I have used both kinds on the hopper pattern I posted earlier.  I am always looking for materials that I can use for fly tying and some times you'll find them in places you wouldn't normally consider.  So keep your eyes open and keep thinking "how could I use this" when your browsing around stores.

So where do you attach the hook to this creature?  What do the bluegill think it is?

Just kidding, I think there is a rubber disco ball that Michaels sells.  Apparently the legs are great for small jig tails.
