Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Hey Bruce cool site, I found it via Pondboss. How do you guys specifically target Redears. Seems I always end up with a bass or some other sunfish when I fish in my well stocked farm pond. I know the Redears are in there......I put them in there.

Thanks in advance,
Eddie

Hi Eddie...

How many did you put in your pond and how big were they. Bass will eat redear. Assuming they are still there... try the more secluded areas especially if your pond is small and make sure your bait is on the bottom. Fish as slow as you can... try a Hares Ear Nymph imitation or Scud look-a-like and let us know how you do.

Low 'n' slow, baby--low 'n' slow.

Provided that he's got adequate oxygen, Mr. Redear would like to be plucking live invertebrates off the bottom substrate. He'll come up top if he has to, and he can even make a good living doing so, but all things being equal I'd be fishing with the livliest live bait, or livliest presented artificial that's on or near the bottom.
Did you finally catch a redear, Eddie? I tried all these bits of advice, but I haven't caught one yet either. If you got one, please share how.
Leave a rod unattended with a big crawler hanging over the side and on the bottom. Go about your business and when you hear your rod being pulled out of the boat, grab on. They spawn in the lakes I fish in very secluded spots, like way back under trees, very close to shore, very shallow. Look for activity and try to get something on the bed. Redears don't reproduce as fast as bluegills so I'm carefull how many I take.
