Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

My favorite spring bait for gills is a rubber spider.I make my own,and have a large arsonal of different colored legs.Bodies are in black and white from stores.Can't seem to find other colors.I use a size 14 dry fly hook,that is razor sharp point.Can't wait till spring to get em on the fly!!!

this is one of my best producers,i thank the spider floating or sinking has taken more gills then any fly.
i tie several types of spiders also ,but this one does best for me where i fish,it is tied on a #4 mustad #3260R.
Hey! I use those same colored legs.Hope to get fancy with fly material this year.Want to try deer hair also. I try to stick to natural colors,but when the spawn is on,all bets are off,know what i mean!!!!
yes i do know what you mean bill,i fish a lake just a few minutes from my camp where i live.i have fished this lake for over fifty yrs. now and know the location of many beds .
i fish these beds all year,pre-spawn,spawn,and post- spawn,although i love to catch big gills ,my favorite is big chinks(Shell Crackers) we call them Chinkapin .
that spider will also catch chinks,although i fish the spiders a lot i also fish a lot of nymphs and some top water.
top water is the most fun for me,but i catch most of my fish on nymphs.nothing like a big thumper on the end of a flyrod.

You folks got me to thinkin' ! Sponge spiders and fly rods are a natural for 'Gills for sure. But I got a vast array of flies stockpiled for Steelhead, a third of which are nymphs. Hmmnnn.... steve b
