I'm going to point to this conversation when I'm bragging about the maturity of the BBG gang. The ability to maintain etiquette in a contentious subject is crucial. Thanks!!!!!

Very well said. Matthew also makes a good point....being truthful and upfront about the actual size is a good way to maintain the respect of your peers. :-)

All great images on BBG....I believe each person develops a particular"style" with their approach to picture taking....just like finger prints.....We're all different...and I believe it should be...and stay that way....adds perspective, interest and enjoyment to the site here...Everyone's having fun in the process of catching that fish....A photo is only an end of a great outing that day...."memories"

I agree, Bill. It's about 50/50. Some people like to see the fish, some care about the angler with it, others are jealous and get pissy... I clearly sized it, not trying to make it appear like a 12" fish or saying it is one.

As for publications... I disagree. I write for numerous sites, magazines, and papers and am a regular contributor/seller of photos to these outlets. I also do promotions and ads for several outdoor companies... and trust me... they never say, "I like the one with the average looking fish rather than the cool shot with the fish really popping!"

Everyone has a diff. opinion. I like to have fun with shots!

I would not be surprised to see the pendulum swing back to more accurate representation of fish in photography. As a viewer, I do like to see the angler's arm, hands, or fingers just to lend a bit of perspective. Regardless, I like photos that really display the fish so I can see scales, fins, etc.

10" gills, 20"+ bass, 40" pike are all true giants, and deserve to be represented in a 1 to 1 ratio.....The wide angle approach has become very popular over the last few years, but it's appeal is fading fast. Many fishing publications have abandoned this technique to some degree in favor of a more believable depth of field, or include visual markers that define the true trophy aspect of the specimen at hand.

Cereal manufacturers have been using this technique for years, although they add the disclaimer "Enlarged to show texture" yet their true intention is to simply catch your eye.

If you've ever seen any of my pics, you know that I'm not a dedicted fan of this technique, especially when visual markers are purposely hidden in order to deceive. The concensus that I've experienced thru the dozen or so fishing sites I'm connected to, is that this type of representation impresses about the same amount of anglers as it offends.

Great fish deserve a great pic, but when presented on outstretched arms it is guaranteed to add a considerable level of doubt to its actual size....adding yet another chapter to the "fish story"
