Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Here in Connecticut just about everyone would consider a 9" Bluegill to be pretty big and the DEP considers 10" and up a trophy for catch and release awards.

Is this pretty uniform around the country or do some of you have higher standards?

Thanks in advance.

Anything over the ten inch mark is a trophy class fish in my book. We have some great hybrid sunfish that we have taken just shy of 12. A 12 inch bluegill would be considered a fish of a lifetime in Maryland.

I consider a bluegill over 1lb to be a real nice fish. Up around a pound and a half would be a candidate for my wall...

We dont even start to keep them unless they are 8 inches long, the bigger the better in my book, here is some photo from the last two years, the quill in the picture is 8 and a quarter inch long,  dont tell me what I 've been eating I should have hung on the wall , I'm waiting for a 16 incherand this one I should have put on the wall

 Nice fish LOTFR...

I think you'll be fishing awhile before you see that 16 incher though....

We don't have too many anglers that target bluegill here in Utah. I'm one of the few. We have a number of waters with bluegill. Typically 8 inchers are considered good as most of us keep the 7 or 8 inchers for eating. The 9 inchers show up occasionally at some waters but we really only have one lake that consistently produces 10+ inchers. The state record stands at 11.5 inches, 2 lb 7 ounces and that one has been since 1993. I'm happy to get into 8 inch bluegill or better but I'm no snob. Those 7 inchers taste great!
