Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

This may be a dumb question, but, when bluegills are spawning do only the males do the (peeing) or do the females also.  I am wanting to put some males only in a small pond and wondered if this could be a good way of identifying some of the smaller males.  I don't have a problem identifying the larger males, but don't want to make a mistake either.

Check this link out. The best your going to fine, Good luck.
Rick,
Thanks for the info, I am a faithful lurker on the pondboss site and have seen this before. I have no problem sexing the larger bluegill, I guess my question is this:
you know when you catch a bluegill and he pees all over you, is this always a male or will females do the same?
Bruce Condello or Bill Cody, can you answer this question please? Thanks!
Honestly, I don't know the answer to this question. I always just assumed that it was the males doing the pee-ing, but I'm not sure. Perhaps we can start a www.pondboss.com conversation and coax Mr. Cody into an answer on there.
Oh! Bruce!......you were paying attention!
Good luck getting this question answered. You're going to need it. I refer you to my question from last year. http://www.bigbluegill.com/forum/topics/if-he-pees-on-you-are-you-in
I can honestly say I have paid attention to the pee factor and don't recall ever being soaked by a lady. I did not take notes. Perhaps it is not a very reliable tell for either of us.

I do recall Bruce has or had an all male pond. He obviously knows how to tell the difference in quantities sufficient to completely stock a pond, because there won't be any reproduction going on to finish the job. Bruce failed a test he didn't know he was taking today, so I can only say he sometimes doesn't pay attention very well. However, since he and I are friends on here, we can send private messages to each other that show up in our e-mail program. Perhaps if you invited him as your friend, you can get his attention through private e-mail.
IF peeing by gills is a "guy" thing, that brings up another question. I don't know much but I have seen some things on here that make sense. Males supposedly spend so much potential growth energy in the spawning process that they effectively stop growing much once they start. A small spawning male may grow up to be a runt. Maybe they can turn the urge off if they are stuck with no girls around. Maybe they only pee on you when spawning. Maybe the way to select only males for your all male review is to stick with the larger ones that you can identify in KNOWN ways.
Breeding male bluegill often swallow extra water to try to make themselves look like bigbluegill to attract a mate, this is a genetic predisposition, the bigger the gill ,the more handsome. When they puff up and equalize the water pressure in their bodies when underwater they have pulled the hammer back and they are primed ready to pee, next when they are caught and lifted out of the water this disturbes the balance between lack of water pressure on the outside of their bodies and the extra water pressure on the inside of their bodies thus pulling the trigger and peeing on Boogieman. I have also noticed in my research that when I set the hook on Big Bluegill that they tend to make circles in the water counterclockwise, could this be because we are in Northern Hemisphere, so in the Southern Hemisphere would they circle clockwise when fighting aginst the pull of the line? Hummmmmm I wonder?
Yer, Lordship. I believe that tornados and hurricanes spin counterclockwise in the northern hemisphere and clockwise in the southern hemisphere. It is called the Coriolis Force. It works on large weather patterns but not on sink drains. That is determined by the geometry of the container and the original motion of the water. I have not paid attention to which way a big bluegill turns circles but now I will. It probably is like a sink drain though. Which way is the LOFR leading the gill to start with.

Now that I am paying attention again, I recall that you have trouble getting your big hand OUT of a cricket can with a cricket in it. I am asking you to start paying attention to how much you have had to drink before entering the cricket can. Perhaps you are puffed up, like the water swigging gills peeing on the boogieman. I wonder does the puffing up make you more handsome! NAH! That is determined by the geometry of the container and the direction of the drinking mind.

Now answer the original question. Have you ever been peed on by a female bluegill? If you don't know, make it a point to notice and report back here. I will.
Have I ever been peed on by a female bluegill? not shure I'll have to pay closer attention.
Do you promise to report on it?
Not only will I report on it I'll try to get photographic evidence
