Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Well, Greetings one and all from Lake havasu City, AZ, home of the London Bridge but who cares about that, the fish are biting and by fish I mean Bluegill.

I went out with my brother yesterday looking for Gills and Bass and found both. For the last three weeks, the Smallmouth Bass have been on beds and are now moving off somewhat. I have been watching my favorite Bluegill hole and I can tell you this much, it is not on the lake but is on the Colorado River just above the lake and is the best Bluegill hole I have ever fished, incredible.

Because temperatures have been somewhat cooler this year, there has been less need for water downstream and as a result the lake level is down somewhat and the area where I catch the really really really big one's is still just a foot under water. I figure in about a week or two the water level will come up about 3 to5  feet as it warms up here in the desert and when it does, the spanw will be on and the gills will move into the "hole" to breed and be caught. (Yes I do release them).

Yesterday we went out as I said and the water temp is just at 68 tp 70 degrees and I caught nice larger than your hand sized Gills in water as deep as 20'. We then went to some reeds about a 1/2 mile inside the mouth of the river and lo and behold there they were pairing up in as little as 2' of water. We were out for about six hours and I caught over a dozen of the little devils with the largest about 10 inches long. He was a wonderful fight. Several nice bass as well.

I used cut Night crawlers and they could not lay off them. Next week, I am going to take some of Leo's bait glue and head out with some meal worms and cricketts and hammer them babies. The water is clear and you can see the bottom in up to 20' so it can be a challenge but they are very catchable and the bite is aggressive and hard as you expect with a Gill. It was a beautiful day, no wind, the lake was calm and clear and the water was refreshing in the 82 degree heat.

Would love to see some of you friends here and have a after Bluegill beer.
