Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

I'm sitting here eating a 18 in. walleye and some 8 in. gills I caught thru the ice today. The gills are by far the best flavored fish. They are all delicious, but the gills rule!! JR

Lake perch I have had great tasting trout freshly caught through the
bluegill ice. I don't like them in the summer or bigger than 12
crappie inches. If anyone knows how to make steelhead taste
walleye edible, please let me know. And I've heard all the jokes.

Bluegill. crappie and white perch are my favorite eaters. Walleye are a treat, when I can get them in the 16 to 20 in range.

The only walleye I ever saw growing up in Texas was the ones on the In-Fisherman Magazine show. I had always been told that they were absolutely the best fish to eat period. Now that I live in Utah and have eaten walleye, here are my two cents on what fish I think taste the best (in order):
1. Yellow perch (yet another that was no where to be seen in Texas)
2. Bluegill
3. Crappie
4. Crawdad-fed smallmouth bass (almost as sweet as a gill!)
5. Walleye

I could go on. I love most of the fish I've tried. Trout are at the bottom of my list. There is a reservoir close to where I live that has rainbows which feed on plenty of freshwater invertebrates. Those trout seem to taste better than the ones I pull out of the local rivers. I also agree with what others have said concerning how you cook them. My favorite way is fried but I won't turn up my nose at some broiled fillets swimming in garlic and butter!

Bluegill in the 7-8 inch range, Crappie in the 9-11 inch range, Yellow perch in the 10-13 inch range, Walleye in the 15-18 inch range are my personal favorites.

Ain't many walleyes down here in Texas. But a good fish fry of bluegill and perch make this old boy happy

Trout, Perch and Walleye so far in my experience. My taste could change and how they're cooked needs to be accounted for.
