Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

This is not the best camerawork, as it was done with an Iphone...I posted the video to youtube back in September, but initially it seemed not to have posted. I just now thought of it and watched it. This is at my best trophy bluegill pond; there were a handful of bluegill among those feeding that were the largest I have personally seen in the water - looked like two-pound range easy but of course that's just a guess. There's a pretty good shot at 2:16 of a monster coming up for a pellet.

How about using a rubber band to hold a food pellet on the hook? Or maybe you could drill a small hole through one and tie it on the hook?

I think your plan to "match the hatch" should work, David.  There are also pellet lures that are sold but I confine myself to live bait or more typical lures such as jigs, or a combination of the two.

I've been thinking of tieing a fly to 'imitate' the pellet food we use at our pond.  I think a smallish hook with some brown yarn or dubbing will do the trick.

Thanks, James!  I'm going to try to get some better ones next spring.

Thanks, Bruce and Tony!  Sometimes it almost seems like bluegill have ESP and don't like being on camera - whenever I would point the camera where I had just seen a big one come up, that one would stay out of sight...Until I pointed the camera in another direction, at which point of course the one I had just left would detonate on another pellet.

It's hard to have the camera directed at exactly the right spot to catch a giant BG as it comes up to take a pellet...I know from experience. It sure gets your heart pounding though when those giant shadows rise up and become visible for just a moment!
