Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Story Submitted to the Editors of INWEED MAGAZINE

I was honored recently when I was asked to submit an artical on taking weeds on a Fly Rod. Setting out on my task I arrived at a secret location where LARGE WEEDS were known to inhabit. Upon arrival I immediatly saw them surfacing in the shallows. They were taunting me.
With floating line, poppers, and small nymphs I carefully approached my target. Poppers were left untouched, but after I put on a small weighted nymph, things started to happen. But the Weeds taken were small. Not what I was looking for

I switched to a sinking line and heavily weighted nymphs. A few takers but not what I was looking for. Tying on a heavily weighted ELECTRIC CHICKEN, I started getting into some larger WEEDS. All were nice in size but not what I was looking for, I wanted those huge rod bending Weeds that were inhabiting the depths of the pond.

One last cast when I felt the take, setting the hook and my heart stood still. Here at last what I had been searching for, it felt big and it felt heavy I fought hard against the pull of the monster. It finally gave up, surfaced and the disappointment set in. Wrapped up in the small weed was a small BGMD. Foiled and Fooled again!!!!!

Large weeds are out there lurking, waiting for you offerings. My quest is not over, I will be back!!!!! Weeds can be taken on the LONG ROD. It takes patience and determination. So bring out that fly rod, change you flies until you find what they are looking for. Somewhere out there is the WEED you are looking for. Don't give up, I never will!!!!!!!!!

Greg I glad you practice catch and release as I. You have some great looking weeds there it would be a crime to harm them in anyway and I can tell you are a true sportsman. What about these other people who just can't stand to catch a little weed here and a little weed there so they go out and buy these giant weed eating machines that glide on top of the water with the sole purpose of doing nothing but mutilating the poor defenseless weed and throwing them on shore to die a slow and agonizing death. To lay on shore to turn brown and rot and decay and smell. See Greg thanks to people like us the weeds will always thrive we are to true sportsman.

Greg I was told that If I got 5wt it would load the rod up better and I would easier for me. Remember I will be in the learning process.

What I want the most on the end of my line is a 3lb bluegill  just like Bruce. I don't know if  there is any one weed that is better for holding fish. I do know that I have good luck with Curly Leaf Pond Weed and it is much easier to fish and on a clear lake it might be as long as 10' to 15' long and in the summer I tend to fish deeper water. I don't mine coontail in the early spring before it gets to thick its good for that early spring bite. Cabbage if I could get in it with a small spinner it would be OK but when I think Of cabbage I'm thinking live bait on a float and I don't use much live bait although I think the right live bait will catch more fish than any artificial. I'm just stuck in this rut and I love to jig fish and catch a few fish doing so. For now since I have no ice all I want is spring to get here. Thank you John for all your input. It is really an interesting subject and there are lots of different takes on it. I know mine I thought if I brought it up I would be willing to try something different and that's what I want to do is learn all I can.

Maybe you can tell me how you fish your different types of weeds. You use live or artificial. Shallow or deep. If deep how do you get through the coontail and cabbage. Any help will be appreciated. GOOD FISHIN..

Dick, do you prefer seeing Coontail, Cabbage, or Curly Leaf Pond Weed at the end of your line ? I'm partial to a combo of Coontail and Cabbage Leaf.
