Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

I've wanted to start a blog for a few years now and keep it updated throughout the year and until now I've forgotten to do it on New Years Day....

I've chosen to do this on this site only so I hope you guys will chime in frequently throughout our new year of 2014.....

I've always been amazed at how I get completely and overly obsessed with a certain species of fish only to find myself weeks later hunting a different species just as seriously....

So here it is fellas, I hope you enjoy and hope you add your own pics and experiences as we fish throughout 2014.....

David, light tackle is my favorite way of fishing.....I've caught and battled some BIG fish on 4/6lb test....today I used a 5'6" light combo with 4lb line equipped....I've had fish up to probably 25-30lb on that outfit!

Nice little "hand bass," Jason. Thats what I call that size.

Tons of fun on light tackle.

It was interesting that these bass wouldn't take my brother's plastic trick worms but they had no problem feeding on the smaller baits I tried. I also tried for some bluegill using crappie nibble on the bottom and under a float to no avail...

1/1/2014

So the new year is upon us and it's far from warm here in North Carolina but as most folks know, this isn't stopping me from at least attempting to get on some fish on the first day of 2014. My brother and I hit a small pond this evening for our annual new year fishing endeavor. The first pond didn't yield any fish whatsoever but the second one gave me my first 3 fish of the year. These 3 were all largemouth bass and I landed the trio on a tri-color bodied grub with a chartreuse curly tail. Slow is the key in the colder water temps and it paid off while I slowly bounced the grub equipped jig along the bottom of this muddy pond. Unfortunately, Matt didn't score any fish this outing but that'll all change in the near future! These 3 bass were almost replicas of one another so I only took one pic as you'll see below. Thanks for reading and good fishing!

I love the idea.......I'm working now to complete my "82 Days on the Albemarle......a view from the Bluegill Chariot" blog now with just 21 days remaining.......I plan to do a similar thing this year but updating as I go......mine will cover the peak 92 day Bluegill fishing period from the first of May through the end of July......Should be fun Jason! Look forward to your exploits!
