Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

A Humble Christmas Fish Poem  2013

Come gather around my fire and a tale I will tell,

Listen real close because I don't want to yell,

T'was the night before Christmas, and the roof was a clatter,

Santa and his Reindeer had landed, that's what was a matter.

He said " I know you have been extra good this year,

so I brought you a new fly rod that catches only the biggest red ears "

Hop in my sleigh and we will go give it a test,

He said I've  got some new flies  right here in my vest.

So I jumped in his sleigh and in the blink of an eye,

we had flown cross country, just Santa and I.

We landed on the water , and it was a thrill.

I recognize this place, " Hey ! this  is Richmond Mill."

We were filling the sleigh, and I was impressed with the deed,

Then all of a sudden Santa said,  " Let's save some for seed".

I told Santa in the Carolinas there are a couple of places more

that hold lots of fish, if we can just get through the door,

The freezers at Jefferys' and David"s  are always full of fish.

Santa said , " We will be there in a flash and I'll give you your wish".

Just cast at the roof and down the chimney the line will go,

straight to the freezer because Santa says so,

You will hook all the bluegill and leave all the bass,

and  we will head to the next roof , so get ready for your next cast.

Leo in California always has  a freezer with fillets that are thick,

The only problem with them is that they taste like lipstick.

He tries to tell us he catches them as big as a dish,

but we know the truth, his wife catches all the fish.

Santa asks, " Where else can we fish, that's the question I 'll ask ya ? "

Since we are not done yet , well, I 'll tell you ,   " Nebraska ".

So we swept in like a hard driving rain

and we scooped up most of the " Condello Strain "

Before we have a fish fry, although this seems like a vacation,

We need to stop by Oklahoma, and pick up one of Greg's portable fish cleaning stations.

        Riding in the sleigh , I never got cold;

I thanked Santa immensely for my new crimson  pole.

Santa said,  " Let's cook these fish up and get them in my belly,

most people thing wrong, it's not made of jelly.

And I'll tell you a secret, you might not think it's true,

keep this under your hat, Reindeer like bluegill too."

As Santa flew off , in my life, I never had such a thrill,

I noticed on his bumper , it said,  "  Licensed to Gill".

The events of this night had been such a surprise,

Great poem. Plenty of reference of great masters in the passages, and of course, nothing be of the bigger truth that my wife always beats my pants off when it comes to..everything..
