Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Yeah, it's little and it's a bass, but it was crazy nice in Peeler, GA (just a few miles inland of Savannah). I was pleased to get something; only there for a little while and reports weren't great. Even though the weekend was nice, they need a little more time to recover from the brutal (for there) cold the week before.

Not in that lake. It wasn't as close to other habitat as the other one (from Saturday pictures). On Saturday, I could see a "maybe" on the far bank of the canal down in the bend; that's what I mean by "other habitat". The canals are full of them and a lot of that lake was within 100' of the canal. So they are in it a lot. We have a few in NC where they are left alone and they are easy to find.

My son just posted that it was officially 76 in Savannah, so I think my estimate on air is pretty accurate and possibly even a couple of degrees low. The ocean keeps the coast warm but when they get a really nice day it spikes higher slightly inland.

That was caught on a twisty tail grub. The reason for barefoot wading was that the lake was up a little and the tall grass normally on the bank was in the water. And it was actually warm enough (I am guessing air ~77, water ~60 in the weeds) to do it. If you didn't wade to mid calf, it was hard to find spots where you could bring it in clean without a really long rod. I felt pretty certain I could have caught more there if we stayed longer, but since I took kids that have to be in school tomorrow with me, I had to get on the road. I was fortunate a local pointed me to the right spot; I had fished fruitlessly a little while before a guy asked me if I had fished there before and then told me he always did much better above the footbridge (barbell shaped lake with footbridge across narrow middle).
