Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Doesn't look like much but let me tell you....unmatched in brackish waters where the shrimp are native also.....lots of growth potential for the fish as well eating these guys......

Thanks Tony.....the sturdier the net the better David because of the weight of the grass and wet leaves that hold the shrimp......

Im gonna have to keep a net handy for these. Oh, wait... I just happen to *have* a dip net.

How convenient. Great photo, Jeff.

I'm hoping to start later today and round up a couple hundred of these guys for the long Veteran's Day weekend......Just amazing panfish bait fished solo or if dressing up your favorite jig.....

I'll add a lot more pictures of grass shrimp with the interest from tiers.....In the spring I'll catch larger ones from different species and will try to display as many color variations as I can find.  The shrimp in this picture is a mature female freshwater grass shrimp that will lay thousands of eggs in March and her offspring will do the same several months later...very prolific species to keep it's numbers up since everything around them like to eat them.......The body details are cool including a little barb on the head.....These guys are quick and agile too....pretty nifty getting around and dodging their enemies.....

Yeah Jim...I'd like to have a couple hundred of these to go find those Fall Crappie too.....As you mentioned, every fish in the water column will crush these....

The research and studies that I have read Jim suggest green and brown are the main colors of freshwater grass shrimp species.......The females will have the green hues from their ovaries......Yeah, I went today in rather blustery conditions, but like you I have already looked ahead once we get this Noreaster out of here......People are killing Crappie but big gills and grandchildren broke the tie the last few days....Crappie next week!

That is it right there!!! Where these little guys are found, if you can duplicate their appearance, you will catch not only bluegill, but many other species as well.

Jeffrey...is this olive to light brownish color a fall hue for the shrimp? The ones on the Delmarva millponds and at Richmond Mill strongly resemble this color. That is a great reference photo for my next batch of grass shrimp jigs.

And, when the gills are on a hot bite, bait tipping is not needed. But I imagine that as the waters continue to chill down through the fifties that bait tipping will sway lethargic fish to your favor.

Glad to see you still getting them in the cold. Once we get this next north easter out of the way it is supposed to warm up...look for some phenomenal crappie and bluegill action next week!

Can't hide my hand print anymore.....those megapixels never lie.......I wanted a close shot to show the detail on this species of grass shrimp.......
