No offense Joe were buds!
I like it all. I call it well rounded.

@jb I rarely use a split shot, even, when fishing the pole.

Did not mean anything by my the comment. I've just observed that fishing over the last few years seems to be heading to a more basic form. Many people who fly fish now are moving to fixed line methods. Not sure if it's a "get back to basics" trend or a backlash against the complexity of fly fishing. Either way, it's all good.

You pretty much nailed it. I see it as a small to medium freshwater method. Tenkara started in the US about 3-4 years ago, Keiryu has justed started to pick up in the US. Telescopic poles run about 4.5 to 6.0 meters and are designed for stream and river fishing. The longer poles allow for perfectly vertical presentation and zero line drag.  I see no reason why it can not be adapted for pond - lake fishing. Long pole, fixed line, bait and split shot is all that is required. Does not get any easier

@ Joe I use the term regression only to denote a return to a style used previously.
Since taking up the fly rod, I've used nothing else; thus I was forced to learn its basics. But I used to tote teles on every outing - so this felt like a departure and not merely a lateral move.

@Mike - the perfect combo for kayaking. Practice stealth on that yak and you'll be able to get as close as you need to.

Keiryu (渓流)as I know it means a mountain stream. Can you tell me anything about the origin of keiryu as a fishing style?

Here's a Google Images link of images for 渓流釣り (mountain stream fishing), they're gorgeous. Really makes me miss my "second country" even if most of it doesn't exactly look like that:

https://www.google.com/search?q=%E6%B8%93%E6%B5%81%E9%87%A3%E3%82%8...

Fish you'll see include yamame, amago (almost but not quite the same species, as I understand it), iwana, rainbow trout, sakaramasu, and maybe some others

Just to give you something else to ponder.  Fixed length fishing, tight line with weight and bait in Japan is called keiryu.

I just find it interesting you use the word regression when describing pole fishing. I'm convinced you will start to see a devolution of fishing methods over the next 5 years.

I can understand that, Scruff.  Heck, if I had a bigger boat, I'd probably be doing exactly what Jeff Abney is.

Well, this is regression, Fuzzy.

I dont make much of it, but I have every kind of fishing gear, like most of us. I dont have 5 dozen like some people, but I can manage just about any style if wanted.

Now, Ive made a business of fly fishing since last summer, but I love fishing with the tele pole. Its possibly my favorite method of all..

The fish in the pond have been giving me the stiff arm with flies lately so I got a little miffed - and hauled out one of the long poles in my collection. Its a 15 foot Chinese knock off I got on ebay in a lot buy - 7 poles for about $35 as I recall. I gave a couple to my son and kept the rest.

Ive put in another worm bin, lately, following the Vince Fusco method. It has been all I can do to resist the Siren Call of the Long Pole until now. SO there you go... I still love it!

Uh oh, Scruff!  You've crossed over to the Dark Side and are starting to become more like Sir Jeffery! :)
