I caught this 8" LMB (?) in the creek along with 18 3-5" BG and Green sunfish. What I'm wondering is why he wasn't eating the BG instead of my bait? There were 100's of them in there.
None of MY fish lips will even touch artificial bait of any kind. I have started using 3" raw shrimp from the grocery store. Keep it in the freezer till needed. Break off small pieces. It seems to stay on the hook a little better. They do like crickets too.
Sharon, I was fishing in Holmes Creek last week, using crickets of course. My picture of 7 different sunfish from one spot included a small bass that hit a cricket. I caught 15 bass in a pond one day on crickets. So I surmise you have started using crickets.
Just kidding about YOUR bait! Futher up the creek, I was playing a small gill I had just hooked when suddenly he got heavier. A small bass hit the hooked gill and had him crossways in his mouth. It only lasted a couple of seconds before they both got off. The point is they do hit what is available, crickets, bluegill, yucky artificials.
Well, when he gets 12", he'll be sorry he didn't swim faster and catch the BG.

A 3" would be about as large as he would want to go for, and it is a ton of work for him. Now your bait just presented itself as an easy target and he went for it.
