Do you love big bluegill?
Took the dressed double hook 5 of Diamonds Dardevle that Carl Hendrix modified .Called this Pickerel up in a 5- 10' area over the weed tops in the NE/E where the wind was coming from. I only managed landing a small Bass on a 3.5" Mojo Reefer vertical jigged at 10', and this Pickerel .The large Pickerel lost at the boat bit through the line at the bottom Easy shiner of an 8# test tandem rig. UGGHHH! I really have to work this getting bit off with swim baits problem I'm having quite often.
Here's my next move to figure out how to hold them on the line and land them ; Fireline 10# ,4 # diameter test leaders.

UNREAL!
40# braid has about the same dia as 8# mono...drag both line types across a knifes edge get the same result i guess... i actually visually saw a mid 30s musky engulf a big bass jig and tail turn 90 degrees and severed the line before i had a chance for a hookset... ive caught quite a few over 30 one of the last memorable catches was on 4 or 6# ice braid with a pink waxie under a slip float.... the irony!
Slip , I gotta ask you , WHAT fish cut through 40 # braid .That had to be huge! I am guessing a trophy Musky!
Great reminds me of the Luhr Jensen 'Hus' Spoon design I like to use for Crappie ,Gills and other panfish.
I'd retire that spoon , How long is it ?Got a pic , i'd like to see that handmade .
Geesh, 40# braid!! My plan without a wire leader for Picks has been longer hard baits like Cranks, Spoons and spinners that they don't seem to wolf down as much as some plastics , but damn if they don't hit those 3" and 2" Easy Shiner Keitech swim baits and bite through the line.
ive had bite-offs with 40# braid... i hate using a wire leader... but if i go out this afternoon it will be with a spoon that has a large amount sentimental feelings attached to it... my Dad made it when i was very young and i have caught many fish thru the years with it... i would hate to lose it now. ... im still debating on whether or not to use it.... reguardless of that decision i will be devoting some time targeting Muskie and N.Pike
sorry about that lost fish sounds like a trophy... its what keeps us old die-hards going back... lol
Slip- Let me know how it works for you and gotta ask you if you think a 10# test Fireline leader will still get bit through? I am trying to maintain a natural feel and look to 2 and 3" swimbaits and have been avoiding the wire leader .At any rate ,today I made up two barrel swivel, Fireline leaders to use with jig heads and a 3" Keitech Easy shiner .( gonna forego the tandem for now ) I'm losing sleep over losing what looked like a 24" Pickerel yesterday when it dove under the boat under Greg's net and cut off. I had his head up but he wasn't finished.
toothy preds this time of year is a hot pattern... this snap has got me fired up ... so going to bring a casting rig with some spoons and a wire leader to the bridge this afternoon.
