YES YES YES!!!

The float dream! Even in the summer you can get the float dream - drifting off to sleep at night and seeing the tip of orange slide into the shimmery water.

Everyone should have the float dream. Great quote.

The pencil floats are great but as Vince says- the crappie and bream floats have such a nice glossy coating and they have fiberglass (read- flex-but-don't break).

Float Fishing Tip

What has saved me many a float from being lost via snag or break-off- always fish a leader that is at least one size or two sizes LIGHTER than your main line. For a snag, your line will pop at the leader. This gives you all your split shot and your float back - every time! If you hook into a massive fish, that leader will pop if you horse it but really 1 lb. difference or 2 lb difference won't lose you a fish. Playing it wrong - will even if you had the same size leader. Tie up a couple extra leaders and keep them on cardboard. If you do this and pre-tie a loop on top of your leader, you can add a loop on in under 1 minute and be baited and back fishing.

Dan Gapen has some really good floats. I have had my eye on his crappie floats with the glass stem. I have always been facinated by the many different types of floats available. To me there is something almost magical about how a float acts when a gill takes your bait. Some of my biggest gills have barely wiggled my float before it slowly disappeared under the surface. I can remember from many years past watching the tiniest yellow ice fishing float in the dark hole all day, only to close my eyes that night and see it as vividly as I did earlier on the ice.

See that stem is not very buoyant - it slips under at the slightest touch. Key for the cold front and cold water situations where the fish is not going to move that tip very much. A secret - the bite never dies, it just gets so weak that your float can't see it and the hook won't move much in the water. Counteract bad fishing times with excellent fishing gear - thin, small, light and responsive and your "bad" times will be better than many people's great times!!!

It also doesn't hurt to be a member of the Cane Pole Crazy group...  this is an elite group of goofballs and gill anglers - also, little known fact, it is the only way to really catch a ton of gills. < Just josh'n. Has anyone ever plugged the Cane Pole Crazy group?? - the answer is now yes.

Love those Gapen floats......I've been using them for years, they have to be one of the better kept secrets in regards to bluegill fishing hardware......most folks have never heard of em'.

Note- this is really a tank that I have that I do balance shots in. This is a simple shot pattern with slightly larger shot for beginners. You can vary the size. These are No. 5 shot at .15 gram. If you add one more No. 4 you have a grub rig. This is probably a good leech or small crappie minnow rig as is. Shot above the float help prevent the float from sliding on the line. The black clip allows you to remove the float from the line and keep the split shot in place.
