I've used a glass bead head here, and soft hackle. Eventually I'll get some dry-type hackle and do these. But I like the look of the glass bead head.
I tied similar ant patterns over the summer and the fish liked them.
Cast it near weeds, wood or rocks and let it sit. Twitch it now and then. If there is a bluegill in the vicinity, you'll soon find out.
If the fish show interest but won't commit to a surface bite, squeeze it beneath the surface so it absorbs water....this will let it sink slowly. The wary fish will grab it then.
