Great story Jeff. Can you provide any info on Lake Barrett. My family lives in the area (San Diego & Palm Springs) maybe on my next visit my father and I can visit there. Thanks.
Neither fish was caught by me. (darn!) I did get a big one at Barrett (see my photos) This beautiful Barrett 'Gill was not quite as large as the Perris 2-11. I believe it was 2-4 lbs. Most all of these big Barrett Bluegill are caught by accident by the bass fishermen that are using small plastic worms or jigs. When I go to this famous bass lake near San Diego Ca., I go specifically FOR the trophy Bluegill! I've caught hundreds, if not thousands of nice bass, but how many 1 pound plus Bluegill have I caught? Never 20, 30 or more in one day, until I found out about Lake Barrett! And these fish are NOT the larger southern "Florida" strain. They are just your regular everyday Bluegill! But the food is very abundant and the number of fisherman per day/week is under strick control. Also, this is an artificial baits only, barbless hooks only, and all and EVERY fish is to be released immediately upon being caught. (I found out the hard way when I brought a big bass into the boathouse dock to get it weighed...bad news) Everyone should try and fish Barrett some time in their life!
