I have caught a few like that over the years, Tony. My thoughts are that the damage was done by a heron or fishhawk of some kind...and they just couldn't quite hang on to the bluegill.
Definitely a lucky fish!

Yes, this fish was caught today in pond #5. I agree with Jeffrey in thinking it was caused by a turtle.
