nothing worse than having a pricey graphite rod explode in your hands carl.i landed or rather beached the head of a 25lb plus grass carp on a 5wt.it was a 30 minute battle.seemed like hours.the rod didn't quite explode but it has several stress fractures.the rod is ruined but not the rods fault.i picked up a really nice old wright mcgill sweetheart 7wt with a pflueger medalist with adjustable drag.gonna be my carp and bass rod.i kept having huge bass swallow the bluegills i was catching on my modern glass 3wt.did not break even doubled over.my tfo would have broke no question

Allan;; some time ago; I caught some stripe on my tfo 3 wt;; small ones around 2 pounds;; thought I was going to break my rod !!  so;; Im rigging up my fiberglass rod !!  man it was fun catching those !!

Carl, I can tell you from personal experience, 3 - 5 lbs Stripers on a 5wt are an absolute hoot!  I've caught a 3 lbs Striper on my 5 wt.  That was the reason why I bought an 8 wt outfit.  Never did get a chance to connect with a bigger Striper on that rig, though.

Jim, I'm not sure which one are a tougher fight, Stripers of Hybrid Stripers.  I caught about a 6 lbs Hybrid a few years ago, and let me tell you, it fought like crazy!  I think that because a Hybrid has a body shaped a little more like a White Bass, but just bigger size, when they turn broadside to the current, they can pull like there's no tomorrow.

Jim;; just have to try it one time !! and yes;; one rod n reel; loaded with strong backing;; fiberglass 8 wt should do it I think;; going to be pure fun if I do hook one !!

any fish in the bass family is quite a fish.even those little yellow bass are quite feisty.

allen we don't have pure stripers ,we have the hybrid white bass/striped bass.they usually top out at 15lbs or so.i have lande them up to 9 on light gear fishing for something else and they really tore up a decent reel.an 8wt might be the ticket carl but have a ton of backing.

I have caught quite a few; 20 pound plus stripe; on spinning gear;; takes a little while to get one in; last one took about 15 minutes)  but would love to tangle with a 3 to 5 pound on a fly rod !

If you think an 8 - 10 lbs class Striper destroys gear, imagine what a 20 lbs class (or bigger) will do?

have a good ; fiberglass  8 wt;; all set up for stripe or bass;;  this fly looks a lot like a murdoc minnow; I once tried to make;; failed miserably trying;; didnt have the right material
