John, shorter quill is better than no quill, and at times  it may be a plus, I prefer quills that are a little longer and if i can find them skinner, the longer quill tattles quicker when the bluegill is just licking the bait, it also adds a little more weight to the fly line for easier casting and more distance with the fly rod. I have quills someone gave me but they are very small. How long are these?

I've made them from small dowel stock; this is nice because its a fairly dense wood and it takes almost no weight to balance.
Easy to make too.

I use o-rings, because I get them by the handful for nothing. Working in the industrial maintenance field does, at times, have its advantages.

I have been using the o rings  for several decades,  actually 40 years, and if you get the right size o-rings they last for years , go to the hardware store and buy them out , their cheap and you have different sizes for different size quills.    LOFR

Carl told me he just cuts up a replacement slingshot band instead of an o ring, and it lasts longer as well

I use small O--rings. You can also rig straight through the eye, as a slip float.
To use it as a fixed float, just draw up Loop of line before the eye and work it under the o-ring. The tension will hold it.

like the o ring trick,we used to just tie em on.but i was dumb kid then instead of a kinda thick old guy
