Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Ken asked me about my most productive top water pattern from last season, and it was a toss up.
I could think of six, both feathered and foam bodied types. Really.

So, let's start among the foam "critter" group, eh? Of that genre, this was the best.

It is a Los Alamos Ant, kin to the more famous, "Chernobyl Ant." The latter is also a good strike getter, by the way. I just used more of these.

It is a somewhat unruly thing to tie, balancing all that dubbing, and legs, and foam bits. But it's worth it.
The materials look like this:
1-2x hook (I use Aberdeens)
Two foam triangles, your choice of colors.
Rubber legs
Dubbed or wrapped body (peacock herl is traditonal - I prefer Ice Dub).

I differ from the "normal" recipe, in that I add the splayed rear legs, a trick Don Schmotzer taught me. Bright colors are easy to see, but both dark and bright LA Ants get strikes.

This one is tied on a large #6 hook, for clarity. I tie them down to size #10, though, which fit in a bluegills mouth better.

But large or small, the fish still smack em.
There it is Ken, the Los Alamos Ant
