Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Got after it yesterday on a nearby lake. Rod on the left has a live minnow on a drop shot rig. Rod on the right has a live minnow under a float (float is out of the frame to the right). You should just be able to make out my yellow drift sock to the right of the bow of my kayak, under the water. I was drifting with the wind, backwards, through an 18' deep hole. Crappie were suspended 10' down randomly here and there. I would get bites on the drop shot rig, and on the float rig. Probably caught 8 or so Black Crappies, averaging 9" long. Also got a small 'gill, and a LMB that was maybe an inch too short to keep.

Local bait shop calls them a "Perch minnow".  1", maybe 1 1/4"?  Small buggers.  Go in and ask for 2 dozen (smallest quantity they offer), and it's more like 4 - 5 dz.

I've been doing some reading about local Crappie fishing.  Seems the Crappie like bigger baits in warm weather.  Start small in early spring, and get larger.  Start large in late summer/early fall and go smaller as it cools off.  I've been catching some fish on a jig pattern called a "Flash Duck" that's about the same size of the Perch Minnows.  I just tied up some bigger versions, for longer casting and even put one on a spinner frame to make a spinnerbait out of it.  Hopefully give those a try Sunday morning to see if they want bigger baits.  If they don't, I'll go back to the smaller ones.  Hoping to explore a new-to-me lake on Monday.

Sounds great Allen .How long  were those minnows those 9" Crappie took?

Thanks Slip.  It was a good tactic, but now I'm thinking I could have tagged even more fish if I had been casting a jig, tandem jig rig, or some other small lure with my UL rod, while dragging the float rig on my second rod.  I might do that this coming weekend :)
