KEITH-- ive always leaned to varnish-- as both a sealer;;and waterproof agent. i usually stain my wood projects; then use varnish. to stain those cane poles-- would be a tragedy buddy!! on my fly rods-- i stained the cork handle-- then used varnish;; fells good in the hand and looks great!
