Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

There is no way I should have landed this bass while fishing for gills last evening after work, but luck was with me. I picked up ten big gills on garden worms and a # 12 sickle hook, then hooked this largemouth and managed to land her on 4 lb Silver Thread. Water was crystal clear and I could see every effort she made. What a beautifully marked, thick and heavy bass! Her teeth serrated the line way below 4 lb test strength.

Diddn't have a scale...just over 22 inches, my best Piney Run bass to date. Released of course, kept the gills!

I think that fish is noteworthy for several reasons.

1. It's body condition is exceptional.
2. It's also a beautifully colored fish.
3. It was caught on such light tackle.

Congratulations.

Thanks, guys for all the compliments. My wife Linda got a 22 1/2 in bass at PR last May 15 that we weighed at 6 1/2 lbs. The fish is in my photos section and has a very large head for its body length. I think it was an old fish, where as this one I got on Thursday looks to be a younger, prime female. I have lost 4 other big bass there this past week while fishing for the big gills. Thanks!

Jim Im going to go with a 6 1/2lb sow you got there. Beautiful fish! She looks nice and healthy. Bet if her belly was full she would prolly get up there close to that 7lb mark!

The basic formula for calculating the weight of a largemouth bass or smallmouth bass is: length x length x length divided by 1600

No... a 22 inch bass that is healthy is a good 7 pounder. I mounted a fat 22 inch LM Bass that weighed almost 9 lbs! A 5 pounder is around the 20 inch mark.

Wow! Very nice! At 22 inches, that bass will go 7.5 to 8 lbs! A very pretty bass too with great coloring and markings. Way to go Jim!
