I've caught them on some pretty unusual things, too. That is one of the great things about fishing - you never really know just WHAT you might catch.
That "stupid" catfish looks be a smallish channel cat, what you might call another sort of "panfish". Generally, they have generous bag limits (if there is a limit at all). So, where you might 'catch and release' a decent gill, there is no reason not to keep cats like that. In fact, since it IS pan sized, it might be well introduced to some seasoned corn meal and hot oil.
This is one of those "glass half full moments" you hear about, where you have a chance to count your blessings instead of cursing your bad luck. While you didn't catch a bluegill... you caught a nice little eatin' sized catfish. Booyah!
