Do you love big bluegill?

8+ lb catfish while crappie fishing through the ice? What?!

I know we are all pan fisherman here but I know y'all can appreciate a good catch no matter the species. This was a big surprise (thought it was a northern) since catfish are not known to be in this lake. They also are a hard catch this time of year, can you believe a little 1/16 oz jig enticed this bad boy to take a nibble? This very well may be a catch of a life time for our neck of the woods....:)

Comment by Nathanael Deloach on April 1, 2014 at 8:09am: I have heard of cats caught through the ice before but never seen it myself until this one....I think the biggest surprise here was this lake is not known to have catfish in it at all..... it was a channel cat. There is a small outlet in this lake (it's spring fed) that goes about a mile to a river that has channel cats in it. That thing must have wiggled its way up that small creek at some point....:)

Comment by Allen Morgan on March 31, 2014 at 3:26pm: I'm to far south to ice-fish, but I have read that many times, people catch channels through the ice. They are active feeders in the winter, as are Blue catfish. Flatheads go dormant in water colder than 45 degrees F, though.

Cool thing is I've caught them all while targeting panfish so I don't need to change how I fish to catch them....:)

Took about 8 minutes of reeling and running before I got it up through the hole. I've caught some nice fish out ice fishing (no offense beloved panfish) but this one takes the cake on being the best catch in my life through the ice...
