David -Good job improving on my thoughts!  We could use an Editor like you at In-Weeds Magazine http://bigbluegill.com/profiles/blogs/inweeds-magazine

This is very cool, John. If you don't mind, may I summarize it a more graphic form?

Annual Lure/Bait Progression

1. Ice over (where applicable) through March/April:

a. Jigs tipped with live bait, progressing to spoons by End of April

2. Mid Spring- Fall:

a. Spinners,

b. Crankbaits

c. Plastic worms

d. Topwater plugs

3. Late Fall/early Winter

a. Spoons, back to almost all Jigs by early Winter.

This jibes with the seasonal temperature changes, too.

I love Jigs too and catch more Crappie and Gills using them then any other lure .I usually progress through the year something like this: Hard water through March into April almost all Jigs tipped with live bait progressing to spoons  .Spinners ,Crankbaits , plastic worms and Topwater plugs in the warmer months and as late Fall/early Winter  appears ,I'm  back through spoons to almost all Jigs again .So far in 2012 I've only caught fish on Jigs ,Spoons,Spinnerbaits and small Jig/Spins .I havent thrown in-line Spinners or Cranks , Rubber worms or Twister tails yet.Thats coming though .

I stressed the poor fish and I believe that's the reason it looks so different from the way it looked when first caught.

I'd agree with that. Being yanked from the water and unable to breathe has got to add a little stress. LOL

I like that you caught them on jigs. I love jigs. I dunno why, I just do.
