Thanks Tony and I agree.....I certainly don't regret getting out.....fishing is really the only hobby for me.....I've caught about 30 open water gills this month and for me in cold water Coppernose country, I'm not complaining a bit......I'm sure I would ice fish if I lived in a region that offered it..........Anything to keep fishing gets my attention!

Fishing out of your comfort zone doesn't always mean a large tally at the end of the day, that's for sure. But, I think the effort itself is a reward of sorts..... you saw things today that you hadn't before, AND you made the effort when it would've been easier to sit by the fire and think about spring.

Plus, you caught fish! Maybe they weren't of the caliber, or the number, that you're used to, but how many other folks did you see out fishing today? When you go to work tomorrow and everyone talks about what they did over the weekend, you can say "I went fishin', drove my boat through the ice, and caught a fish or two"........

That right there is worth something in my book.

Plenty of backwaters Tony but rarely over 12 feet......We have a wind tide here which doesn't move the water too fast but I keep trying different things....I wasted 30 minutes trying to get a picture of some larger white perch that were breaking through skim ice to strike the surface and two were stuck flopping on the surface before breaking back through.......I don't see the ice much so I wasn't sure what was going on there.........Not a productive fishing day but different for sure...............

It never got this cold in Louisiana and South Carolina Carl and doesn't do it very often in Northeast N.C., but I get a lot of inspiration from the folks that do well in cold water so I wanted to get out again......turns out I only fished five times in January. Today was the coldest water temperatures that I have ever caught a Bluegill in at 34 degrees.....so I was happy to add that to my resume....I always like to get out an open the high jets on my outboard, just so happened today I had to crawl for a half mile to get out of the ice.....I hope it starts warming up soon because I worry about the Coppernose Gills.....

I think moving water might work against you in the colder months. Are there deeper, backwater areas with no current available?

jeff; when it gets that cold; ill hibernate!!! spring is not that far off!!!

You can tell this creek is almost 100% skim ice.......it was like this all the way out to the main river today.....about a half mile idling......definitely different.....
