Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

11/4/13 :With wind chill the air temp ranged from low 30's to low 40's. Fished SE end of lake by dam facing the NE wind ,from 10am till 2:30pm .65 fish total ,4 species
SPOT ONE: Best Fish per species ,were 12 " and unbelievably wide Crappie(my favorite fish of the day),10.5" White Perch ,11" Yellow Perch and about an 8" Male Bluegill . Started off with Tandem white Buck tail jig
rig. Immediately caught a Crappie around 11"and a few Yellow Perch .Fingers were cold so I put on mittens over fingerless gloves and searched the shore line for Mussels . Found a huge one .First time fishing with mussels ,worked great ! I tipped the Tandem rig jigs with Mussel bits .My first of three tandems was a Yellow on bottom jig and a white on top . Got two other tandem Yellows later. Experimented, tipping both jigs, and just tipping bottom jig and got several fish on upper jig /untipped , as well as lower jig tipped . Caught 4 species ,Crappie ,Yellow Perch, White Perch and Bluegills .Switched over from white Btails to Chartreuse Btail with 1" Chartreuse twister tails .Kept catching . Switched to and caught a few on the float rig . One Yellow Perch kept for cut bait after no more mussels were found. Perch eye worked great on the float /Jig rig. In the meantime a few casts with a Rattlin' Rap scored zip.
SPOT TWO: Mostly slip floating and the Crappie loved the Squirrel tail/chartreuse twister tail/Perch eye offering . Rip rap with a band of windblown leaves right up against the end of the lake was the ambush point for Crappie and Yellow Perch. Caught about 5 nice heavy and thick Crappie 11" - 13" and then it was all Yellow Perch besides perhaps another Crappie or two . Tried perch roe on tandem rig jigs and caught. the 3rd double came at spot two. A few fish caught on 10th oz. Thunderbolt spoon tipped with perch stomach or flesh. All fish released but I may regret that !

Hope to hear of your success David . I think it's important that the wind was blowing to the deeper end of the lake . Another lake would have been perhaps a better choice today if the wind was blowing from a different direction .Fish the lake that blows to the deeper end this time of year unless there's a warm spell .It's a cold front condition up here now but next week its supposed to be 20 -30 degrees higher .Ya know the yellow Perch and Crappie save the day for me in colder weather .They sure did today .

Im listening, John. I remember you said the water was down. I was out at the pond the other day and noted the wind blowing right into the shore - and it is accessible. If I can make it this weekend, Ill be there.

You're welcome Jim .Can't believe I have anything to offer you when it comes to fishing !

David ,no boat because my Suburban home  lake has been lowered a lot for folks to fix their docks .Can't launch one but didn't need one . It's a follow the wind, fish the accessible shoreline approach that was really great today .

Thanks, John. I'll keep all this in mind for the next 3 days when I hit some local ponds

Oh Jim ,I used two Tandem rigs today and both caught great .White Buck tail jigs, tipped and untipped  and Chartreuse Btail jigs with 1" Mister Twister chartreuse tails ,tipped and untipped  .Three doubles and the singles caught fish on both the upper and lower jigs equally I'd say .  http://bigbluegill.com/profiles/blogs/tandem-jig-rig-for-pannies

Fish were taking at 4-5 feet I'd say on both the float and tandem rig Jim.  Slow steady retrieve with a few twitches using the tandem rig got plenty of yellow Perch  a few Crappie a few White Perch and three Bgills. The float rig drifting up to this leafy cover nailed this Crappie .I fished two spots in a 50 yard area by the dam . The wind gets all the credit for bringin' the fish to me  ! I have experienced the great  "wind to the wall " bite too many times successfully not to try it again !

I would consider this a sensational effort and look at those nice crappies! Wow!

John...could you explain your double jig rig and how you retrieved it and the approximate depth all this took place?

Thanks, all the 7 or 8 Crappie were fine fish today . The Tandem Jig rig and the floated rig got it going today on a bunch ! Mostly Yellow Perch were caught but these Crappie were thick !!
