Jim, I'll bet the flower you're thinking of is a goldenrod. We use to collect grubs from them also.

i really wish i could remember the wild flower with the grubs in the stem.you would find the dead stalk this time of year and there would be 5or6 maggot size larvae in the stalk when you cut it open,i got some yellow jacket nests on the house i am gonna see if i can knock them down.gotta go on the roof any way

My favorite ice fishing bait would have to be spikes (maggots), but a very close second would be nut weevils....I get em' from hickory nuts myself, but I would imagine that most nut bearing trees suffer from a similar pest.

Tony

Simple B shot 6 inches above will get the fly down. You right, the trick is to stay as vertical as possible. Don't worry about the take, your will be able to feel just keep your finger on the rod blank. This will also works on open water. The takes are more noticeable especially if fishing 2 lb test or lighter.

I use the same process for micro fishing, the major difference is one lb test, 26 nymph and #10 shot

In Japan this technique with a fixed line pole would be called seiryu fishing. It can be done with either fly or bait

Have Fun
