Aquarium quality colors! That is the neatest colored freshwater fish I've ever seen.

It is my understanding that redears have the ability to predate on zebra mussels. I guess it would make sense, but I honestly don't have any scientific literature to be certain that this is the case. I do know that there is some overlap in diet of redears and pumpkinseeds. It really makes me wonder. Sounds like something we need to research. I'll start looking into it.

Very interesting Bruce.....for years I thought nothing predated the Zebra mussel....recently I learned that the Goby fish fed regularly on a diet high in Zebras......I would guess that if Pumpkinseeds have shell crushing capabilities that they would be feeding on this plentiful source......Unfortunately Geneva does not have any Redears but if it did.....they would be giants.

You would think that blue gills would feed on smaller zebra mussels, i have caught gills with small snails inside them, never really payed attention to double check if they were zebra mussels.

i have never fished at lake geneva i usually try and stay closer to home but with this cold front lake winnebago gill fishing has almost dissapeared, green lake is the kind you have to fish everyday to find the schools if you dont its just another catch 5 keepers in 4 hours kind of day, and i live 45min-1 hour away and working 5, 12 hour days i just dont have the time to run back and forth to green lake. and everything else calls for a decent boat and i dont have a decent truck to hawl my boat.

Do you think the Punkins actually consume the zebra mussels? I know that shellcrackers do.

Fascinating commentary. I love this stuff.

Luckily I'm not inclined to start a website called www.bigzebramussel.com - - - cuz if I did, I would have to feature dozens of pictures of beautiful sunfish created by that water clarity - - - and I might get in trouble from local biologists for advocating zebra mussels for your pond - - - - - which I don't........
