Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Caught this fish on a Rapala DT-3 Original Pearl Shad pattern. When we started fishing it was 34 degrees with rain mix with snow precipitation going on. However, our adrenaline kept us warm and determine. It was the first day of Loch Raven Reservoir opening for the season. We figured the warmest part of the lake would be where it was rockiest. We also wanted to look for coves next to deep channels where the wintering fish would be just moving up from. The water temp in the morning was 45 degrees. By the afternoon it climbed to 46.9 degrees in some places. Despite the cold I was surprise to see how active the fish were. The crankbait bite appeared to be the most effective although we did miss a few on soft plastics. But when fishing the cranks we were just burning them over the rocks.

John that day I was fishing more of a stready retreive.  I think because it was snowing and I was cold!  But the best method for cranking is play with the speed and stop it from time to time.  The bait I use is made by Rapala and made of balsa wood that is very light and floats.  So a lot of the time the fish I've caught have hit bait while it was rising up.
