Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

The old man (me) fishing for bass at Lake Barrett. Got tired of catching 1 pound Bluegills, so fished and caught many nice sized bass.

Sounds like a fun lake to occasionally fish. The regs seem to be working well.

I can't wait to fish Barrett this year! I agree, Tony, the strict access is what makes Barrett the way it is. Well, strictly speaking, being closed to fishing for something like 50 years is what made it the way it is, the access controls keep it that way. I reckon it's the closest thing to Richmond Mill we'll ever see in California :-)

Tired of catching 1-pound bluegills, must be great to have problems like that ;-)

All those regs and fees are part of the reason the fishing is outstanding.....open to the public, but access to the fish is strictly controlled. Looks like it works!

Yes Jim, nothing has changed except the fees, which have naturally gone up.  I believe it is now $80.00 to get a pass for up to 4 people to fish, which includes a boat and motor, and each fisherman has to buy a fishing permit of $20 at the dockhouse counter which is right next to me here in this pic.  They only sell 25 tickets for each day of operation, so no more than 100 fishermen are on the lake.  The lake is only open on Saturdays, Sundays and Wednesdays.  The lake has an open season of only about 5 months, May thru September.  No fish can be kept, (have to released immediately, I found out!) and only artificial lures/baits with barbless hooks are allowed.  But with all these rules and regulations, it is worth a trip because the fishing is just outstanding.

The last I heard, Barrett had a quagmire of regulations and limitations to fish, along with daily fees and rentals only for boats. Are these regulations still in place, and is it still kicking out big fish like this?

Yes, I did get a 2 pounder, just not from the dock.
