It was caught where there is quite a current as water is being pumped into this area. The shad are here in abundance, as are the pelicans and other diving, fish eating birds. Needless to say, fishing is good here though you have to fish deep water.

Yes, the tail is huge. Minor mutations are common in fish. If it turns out to be an advantage in some way to this fish, it may have more young that share this trait.

OK I've got to comment on my own pic. Does this almost 10 inch fish seem to have a larger-than-average sized tail?
